Grand Central Station's Mail List Server Information
Grand Central Station now offers Mail List Hosting
So what does that do? - Glad you asked! A mail list server provides one specific address for you to send mail to. It then turns around an sends a copy to everyone who is subscribed to the list. List are "topic" oriented so usually all mail send to a mail list address a specific topic. A mail list also makes archives the mail so late commers can go and access history of the group so the same comments to not have to be discussed again over and over. Our policy is to keep these on file for at least 90 days.
Subscribing and Unsubscribing are automated so it is kind of self running with a few options of the owner of the list.
You say you have heard of digest lists? - Interesting you should mention that. All list have the option to have an optional digest list. With a list the mail accumulates to a specified size. Once that size is reached it can be put into one file, stripped of alot of the mail "header" information and sent out to people who subscribe to the digest. The advantage is one file, and smaller space needed to store it one your computer. Disadvantage is you don't send email to a digest list and usually if you have $.02 to say you have to mail it to the main list, not the digest list.
Features available to the List owner are
- Main List only
- Main List and Digest List
- Moderated Mail List
- Open or Closd Main List
- Open or Closed Digest List
Man List and Main List with Digest is fairly straight forward, however I will give a short explaination of the other options.
Moderated List is only available for main lists and not digest since you do not send email to a digest list. It means when anyone sends a message to the list, the message is routed to the list owner, the list owner can then forward it to the group or decide not to allow it. This happens with each and every message and so gives the owner absolute control of what the list receives.
Open or Closed ListThis option is available for both types of lists. With open lists, a user would send a "subscribe" notice and they would be automatically subscribed and sent a short instruction of how to use the list as well as a welcome letter written by the list owner. With a closed list all requests to subscribe are sent to the list owner. The list owner can then allow or dissallow the request for subscription. While waiting the requesting party is automatically sent a notice that the resquest to subscribe has been sent to the owner. If and when the owner allows the subscription, the requesting party will receive the same instructions and welcome letter.
